https://sites.google.com/a/msudenver.edu/chandlerwebquestwwii/

Subject Matter Area: World War II, History

Grade Level: High School

Planned Length in Days: 1 Week

Intro:
World War II was a major event in World History but also in American History. When Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked in December of 1941 America entered, what was now a global war that affected all. During this time in America, radio was the form of entertainment as well as being a way to relay information to the masses. Families would gather around the radio, as we do today with the TV, and listen to comical shows, drama, sports, and news. This assignment will focus on the news and historical radio shows.

Task:
Each student will be paired with another. As a pair I will assign each of you either a prominent figure or event during World War II. Each pair will be in charge of writing and recording a radio script. The pairs that are assigned prominent figures will act as a PBS program and do mini biographical show. The pairs assigned events will act as news casters from the 1940's and broadcast in present tense tone. Each broadcast will be 2-5mins long.

Process:
Each student will be paired with another one from the class, I will choose partners. Each individual will have their own role in the broadcast split 50/50. Students may choose to split the work however they seem fitting, ex. 1 student can write the script and the other can be in charge of recording and speaking or both students can write individual scripts and both speak during the broadcast. BOTH STUDENTS MUST RESEARCH EVENLY.

The 5 Prominent figures that may be assigned are as follows:
1. Winston Churchill
2. Adolf Hitler
3. The Nazi's
4. Oscar Schindler
5. Rosie the Riveter

The 5 events that may be assigned are as follows:
1. Pearl Harbor
2.D-Day
3. The Holocaust
4.Atomic Bombs dropped in Japan
5. The End of the War

Each subject will be assigned at random by the teacher. Once assigned a subject or figure/s each student must start researching their certain area. Once research is compiled, they will get together and discuss each others findings. Students will be in charge of drafting a script. Rehearsing is very important to the flow of the broadcast, this will be easily recognizable in the final submission of the assignment so make sure to practice.

Once you feel comfortable with the script and it is well rehearsed, you will go ahead and record the broadcast. Each of you will be using the program audacity.(which I will the shoe the class how to use) After each pair gets a good recording you will be able to edit and add background music to your broadcast to your liking.

Before World War II, the class will have already studied World War I and after World War II we w ill move into The Cold War and Civil Rights, continued by the Vietnam War.

Most standards are utilized in this webquest assignment; Standard 1,3,4 and 6
